38. Mickey's Not-So-Scary & Costumes (More Magic!)

I am your host, Allie, and I'm here today with Stacey and we are talking all things Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party.

[00:00:29] Because even though some of us are not ready for summer to end, Mickey and Disney are like, here's a pumpkin. We'll have a latte. It's fall. It's Halloween and we're covering everything you need to know about the party. Stacey, you and I, we love Halloween. We do. We love costumes. That's what's super fun for me. I just love costumes. I love this party. It's great. Disney does not allow costumes, dress up in, you know, you can do a bounding and we're going to talk a little bit about that.

[00:00:56] But typically in the parks daily, costumes are not allowed, right? And it's kind of to protect the integrity of the parks and the magic and the characters and for safety and all of those kinds of things. But at the party, you can dress up. You can have a costume. You can have a theme. You can lean into a character, a movie. And we're going to talk so much about the best ways to create that for your family and the group of people you are heading to the party with. And you and I have done this a lot of different ways. So I can't wait to kind of share some of that.

[00:01:26] And honestly, I want to talk a little bit about costumes in general. But before we do, we need a quick update on what's going on at Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party. A lot of it, a lot of the party this year, 2026, it's underway. A couple events have happened by now. A lot of it's the same. Everything that we love about Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party. My very favorite thing about the party in general is the parade. I love the parade.

[00:01:53] The parade is, you know, it's led in by the Headless Horsemen. And then of course, the dancing ghosts like from Haunted Mansion, the Gravediggers. Oh my gosh, the Gravedigger choreography is literally so good. Yes. Captain Jack's, the Pirates. I love it all so much. All of that is still there. So the parade is my favorite part by far, followed probably by the fireworks and Jack Skellington kind of ushering those.

[00:02:22] Do you agree that's your best part? The parade easily. I mean, it's so unbelievable. It's such a grand performance and it is a long performance, you know, and it's so interactive with the characters and really fun and special. It is absolutely no question top of the list for me. I do like the fireworks as well. It is a little bit shorter than when you're accustomed to the happily ever after length, but really cool, really fun. Not so scary. Just scary enough.

[00:02:51] Just scary enough. Just a little dark and spooky, you know, skeleton type focus. I think it's probably your scariest type feature to it. But the other thing that I really enjoy the most about it is the costuming of guests. I love just walking around all night and, you know, you're doing your trick or treating and you're riding your rides really quick because the lines are shorter. But the interaction with other guests about each other's costumes is also really fun for me.

[00:03:18] So good. The Hocus Pocus show is another highlight, right? So that's the can't miss stuff to me when you're paying this price. So we do have a Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party draft episode. This is more magic, right? So this is just an abbreviated what's new. If you want an in-depth understanding and coverage of the party, check out that episode because we're not going to get too in-depth today.

[00:03:40] I do just want to say, you know, as a non-park ticketed guest, a party ticketed guest only, you can enter Magic Kingdom by 4 p.m., which is nice because the party doesn't actually start until 7. So you get three hours to ride some rides and experience Magic Kingdom and just be in there and be ready. Because once the party launches from 7 to midnight, I have found that my family focuses less on the things we can do daily and more on making sure we see the shows, hitting the trick or treat spots.

[00:04:07] I mean, you get way more candy than you do regular trick or treating. Oh my goodness, yes. So really leaning into why is this experience different than a park day is what we love about it. But of course, every year they have some updates, changes, and things to be on the lookout for. So let's talk about those as the 2026 Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party has unfolded. It's just a quick reference guide on what you can look for in the party.

[00:04:32] And then, of course, we're going to talk about how you need to dress for the party and how you can come up with how you're going to dress for the party. Powerline Dance Party. Are you a big fan of Powerline Max, Stace? Our times didn't hit exactly for when he was so popular, but I have come to love him and really have watched it since. It was a Goofy movie, mainly because I wanted to be in the know.

[00:04:58] You know, like I knew that he was with another generation, was really into him. It's like, I got to know why. Who's Powerline Max, you know? And of course, I love Goofy. I love old school Goofy movies that were like ABC shorts. I loved all of those, like sports. And I was excited that Goofy had his own movie. So, yes, in a way, I have real respect for Powerline Max. And particularly, once you've experienced him at this party, how can I not be a fan?

[00:05:26] It's such a fun little part of the show, part of the night, and he is in a new place now. And it's really going to be helpful for those who really want to see him because even in my attempts to see him, I've missed him. Yeah. He's got his own stage now. Whereas, when he was in a parade, and I hope that this will prevent him from not being visible in the rain or in its wet because I missed him one year. The first year, I was really like, oh, Powerline Max. I think it was probably his first year.

[00:05:54] And it had rained before, and it did not rain during the parade. They had the parade was able to go on. But for some reason, they said that because of the rain, he was not able to come. So, I'm assuming his shoes are too. Yeah. Yeah. Rain is hard for him. I don't know. So, yeah. Yes. Anyway, so now he's on a stage. I'm hoping that means he'll have a better setup for no matter what. His stage, however, is not stationary. So, I also feel like I missed Powerline Max a little bit.

[00:06:22] Just, I totally understand that he is a cult classic. People are obsessed with Powerline Max. And I love that he has this identity and this spot. I am not a super fan, but I want to dance with him all day long. And it kind of helps me understand. So, he used to have a pre-parade performance. Say that fast. On Main Street USA. It was shortly before the Boutier parade that we love and adore. And Max no longer performs ahead of the parade.

[00:06:50] Instead, there's now a party where Max performs with his Powerline Party Pack. But they are happening, that's happening throughout the park at pop-up locations. So, it's kind of an immersive all-park experience for the party where you can find Max and dance with him. And I just think anything that's pop-up is going to be really fun. That's great. That is really great. I think if it means a lot to you, you can ask a cast member and they can definitely point you to Powerline Max. But chances are, if you're roaming the park for Halloween, you're going to find Max.

[00:07:19] That is great. Once you've seen the movie, too. Like, I don't, if you haven't watched Goofy Movie with this particular scene, you don't really know why it's so fun and cool. Maybe not. Anyway, it's, watch the movie. It's, it's really cute to see him. And I, like I said, a couple of years, I had a hard time. I was like, I still haven't seen Powerline Max. And one part of it was, I was over in Frontierland trying to see the parade from there. He never came that way. He was only on Main Street. Yeah.

[00:07:47] And then with the rain and anyway, just, it took several times of going before I ever saw him. And this is a nice change. I think it'll be, he's very popular. I'm going to skip our next thing because I'm going to go back to it here at the end. So another new thing for this year, if you're heading to Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party, the Disney Junior Jam at Cosmic Rays is being swapped out for a Destination Descendance Party, which is a dance celebration set to movie-inspired music from, like, Descendants.

[00:08:16] Descendants should be all over this party. I feel, and maybe it's just because I'm a mom in this era, but I feel like Descendants are huge. And I've always loved this Disney IP. Like, I thought from the moment I heard they were doing a villain kid or VK, if you're familiar, library of films, I always thought that was a great idea. They're still cranking them out with new villain kids and new storylines. My kids love them.

[00:08:44] Even my 11-year-old, you know, will still get excited to watch the new one. So Descendants and a dance party, it is a dance party. It is for younger kiddos. It is to get the wiggles out and have a rest maybe for the adults. But I just think any presence of Descendants in this party is going to be great. Now, you said parents can have a little rest. I don't have a rest in Cosmic Rays when I go there during the dance parties. It is so, boom, boom, boom. It's very loud, very fun. Lots of wiggles all around you.

[00:09:11] Not restful, but not serene at all. No. But very cute, very fun. I love the play on words, the Descendants. That's so, you know, I love a good pun. And I think that's super cute. And yes, really great. It's also, I'm happy for the characters, the cast member characters that get to do this. I think it's really fun for them. And they can interact in such a fun way. So it's, I think it's smart, smart, smart. Good job, Descendants. So good.

[00:09:41] This one's something you're excited about, I'm sure. Captain Jack's Buccaneer Bash debuting in Adventureland. Plus more Disney villains roaming the party in trick-or-treat areas than there were last year, which is great. Only a few last year appeared near the start of the night. This is going to be a more heavy presence. I tend to believe that this is probably happening in promotion and excitement for the new villains land. I think leaning into villains, I hope Descendants are present in villain land. I don't know. Their storylines in real life don't really cross over.

[00:10:10] You know, they live in the Isle of the Lost. So I don't know if that's going to happen. But anything that's bringing that Disney dark forward in preparation for that new land is very exciting. But Captain Jack's Buccaneer Bash plus the presence of more villains. A new popcorn bucket, which I know a lot of people are very excited about. You can choose between a hatbox ghost bucket or a headless horseman bucket. What would you pick? Because they're both really good. Yeah, they're both good. I mean, I'm so much more a fan of the headless horseman.

[00:10:41] But what do we call it? The hatbox ghost. He just made his way to Disney World recently. He's cool. Yes. And I followed all of that saga and the history of trying to put him in Magic Kingdom. So I think that's very cool. And that popcorn bucket is very cool. So I would probably choose that if I was going strictly based on it being a popcorn bucket. But overall, I'm a big fan of the headless horseman. I'm not a big fan of popcorn buckets in general. I just think they're clunky. I don't have anywhere to put them.

[00:11:10] There is a limit to two per person if you're getting a bucket. And if you want any merch, I'm going to go ahead and recommend you get it at the beginning of the night. It will sell out. They do not bring more out. Yeah. And if there's anything you like, get it. Because it does change. You know, we're talking about changes and updates this year. There is 2026 specific merch. If you went to the party, you're going to want to remember that. Yes. So get that early. And get a popcorn bucket if that's something that means something to you.

[00:11:39] I would want one of both if I was actually getting one. I just love that. The headless horseman and the gravediggers are my absolute favorite parts of the party in general. So kudos on both of those. Gravediggers are so cool too, yes. Yeah, I'm also not big into the popcorn buckets. I have a couple. One day I'm going to have a podcast space behind me where I can display some things. But yeah, popcorn buckets. Not today. So I was like, you know, this would look cool. But I'm glad that they are a fun collectible. They're really fun collectibles. They are. If you're into it. Plus cute.

[00:12:09] Yeah. I love popcorn. Yeah. And you do get the refills with them. So the savory juxtaposition, like the candy is so sweet and overwhelming. And then to have the popcorn, that's nice. You got to have it to balance it out. Yes. There are always things changing. It's definitely possible we didn't catch them all. We're not doing a deep dive into the different treats and snacks you can have this year. We're obviously not breaking down the merch.

[00:12:35] But highly recommend you prioritize those things when you're visiting a party that you paid a ticket for rather than, I hate to say it, but waiting an hour or more for Tron. That feels silly. If there's something we forgot, something you enjoyed, you love at the party this year, make sure you're in our Facebook community so you can talk about the party, a party you maybe went to in the past, something you liked this year. [00:13:02] And I'm going to segue that to what you and I really want to talk about, which is costumes. And for all of you listeners, M&Ms out there, the magic word is costume, right? The other change I wanted to say is that there is a brand new Stitch experience. It debuted this year. It is Stitch, Lilo, and Angel hosting a shifting dance party masquerade on the stage in Tomorrowland. Now, there's usually some sort of dance party show thing happening in Tomorrowland at that stage, which, fun fact, I danced on when I was younger, Stace.

[00:13:32] If you didn't know that in high school, my dance company danced on that Tomorrowland stage. At the Halloween party, Stitch and his friends are trying on different costumes and changing themes throughout the night. And it will, of course, include Stitch in his famous Elvis costume. Elvis. But I'm excited to see new themes. Yeah. Quick. I love a quick change. And, I mean, Stitch, that's what he's known for, this cute little Elvis particularly.

[00:14:01] And that is kind of, I feel like, surely that's the finale costume for him for the night. I don't know. Yeah. But so cute. And it is a fun way to do it. I think this is one of those things where you do, you just take time to do the party. You know, like you mentioned about waiting in line an hour for Tron. You know, yes, ride these rides if you can. If it makes sense. If you can fit them in. That's the fun stuff. Don't walk past these great opportunities. I mean, they're doing like these little party dances.

[00:14:30] You know, the electric slide's still happening. You know, it's just fun. Go hop in for a couple minutes because you're dancing with characters. Yeah. What a unique experience. Yeah. I still, we still have experience with dancing with the Incredibles years ago. The kids, they were all teenagers. And Mrs. Incredible was kind of being flirtatious even with my son a little. It was so fun and cute. And those are just still some of my favorite memories. So take the time to go do these little things, even if just for a few minutes. You've got the time. Don't rush. Absolutely.

[00:15:00] Let's talk about costumes then. Stitch is quick changing. He's on theme with Angel and Lilo. When it comes to deciding how you're going to dress for the Halloween party, because once I buy my tickets to the party, I'm immediately, and you know, costuming is part of our career. We own a dance studio, right? Yeah. We are coming from that lens of this is a very important piece to this. I think there are maybe four categories of ways to costume for the party. Okay. Kind of worked this out in my mind. The first way is you're the t-shirt family.

[00:15:29] We're going to Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party 2026, and you're all matching. Yeah. Totally appropriate for this party. Do it if that's what you want to do. Yes. The t-shirt family. The Disney bounding family, right? This would be subtle takes on characters. Okay. Then I would say you're the parents that wear the t-shirt and you're like, oh, my kids can just pick out any costume they want. Yeah. And then there's the family that is, we are on a theme.

[00:15:57] We are all matching and we are pulling from some sort of Disney inspiration to do it. Would you say those are like the four categories? Yeah. Because not dressing up in any capacity is not an option. If you don't like costumes, if it's all overwhelming, get a t-shirt. That's fine. Yes. Yes. Please dress up. Yes. But you have to be nodding to Halloween somehow. I don't know where that term, I heard the term Disney bounding came from like an influencer or something and she, that's what she was doing. I don't even know.

[00:16:24] And I don't understand why it's called bounding. I don't get it, but that's the term. And it basically just means you're wearing regular clothes that are colored or accessorized or something to a character, but you're still in a normal outfit. Bounding is very fun, especially on a normal park day. I love to get creative and say, oh, look, I'm kind of Rapunzel, you know? Yeah. I would say that bounding is really fun at the party.

[00:16:52] Maybe if you're going with a group of adult friends, it's an easy thing to pull off. We did a Disney bounding as the Seven Dwarfs one time. That was super fun. Yes. In fact, I was wanting to point that out when we did the Sneezy episode and you're like, yeah, nobody likes Sneezy. I thought about that on the real thing. And I was like, I know, because y'all assigned me Sneezy when I wasn't on the Zoom meeting to pick our Dwarfs and I got the leftover Sneezy.

[00:17:19] When I re-listened to that, I thought about that and I was kind of mad at myself that I didn't bring it up in the moment. But you were Sneezy. I didn't say anything at the time. You should have. I'm so glad I have an opportunity to say it now. But it was fun. It was cute. Remember when I had my little clear bag? I had my little clear purse. And I had tissues and Benadryl, which I know we talked about Zyrtec on the thing, but I was like, I should have used the term Benadryl because whatever. Hey, you know what?

[00:17:47] If there's any pharmaceutical company out there that would like to sponsor us with their allergy medication, just let me know. Yeah, but that was just really fun. We had our little caps and our just normal outfits. I think I was in just like a little skirt and top and a hat. And then I had my bag with my Kleenex and Benadryl. That was bounding. The easiest bounding for especially like an adult group of girlfriends is princesses. They are so easy to Disney bound as.

[00:18:15] I feel like every princess has that little trinket or pet or friend that you can kind of embellish with a purse or a hair clip or something. And then you wear, I don't know, an athleisure dress. I don't own an athleisure dress personally, but I see a lot of that for adult women that do that. And you kind of look matchy matchy, but you also get your own identity. And that's very fun. And have your little lounge fly or something, you know, that's your, whatever your little back part bag is for the day. It can be all matchy. So yeah. Yeah.

[00:18:45] I, that's not really my, I don't have a lot of that kind of thing. Lounge flies I've talked about. I love the way they look and how fun they are. They're just a little small, uncomfortable for me. I don't have any dresses like that, but I see that sort of bounding and that sort of lean in for adults, especially, or if you're an adult trying to match your kiddos and your kids are over the top and you want to do a bounding approach to match them. If you're uncomfortable in a full costume, I think that's a smart way to look at it as well.

[00:19:13] You and I though, we are fully themed immersive. I think a good way to decide how you're going to, because I'm sorry, we're just those moms that didn't let our kids fully have autonomy and pick. Maybe that's terrible, but we would pick a family theme and then maybe within that theme, we'd let them pick. So a good example, and you're going to share this picture. We went with a group of, I was 20 to 30. It was somewhere in that ballpark. And we went to the Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party first. And then we went on a Halloween on the High Seas cruise.

[00:19:42] But we really wanted one big theme where we could all be included. And we could think of exactly one, one theme where there were enough characters to fill 20 to 30 spots and still not have everything covered. And that was, of course, Toy Story. Toy Story. So cute. So cute. Now, it's also very common. So if you're somebody that doesn't want to be dressed like everybody else, we do like to do something more unique.

[00:20:07] But if you're looking for fitting a specific group or being very, very themed together, I love pulling inspiration from Disney film. Disney movie is recognizable. Everybody can pick a favorite character. I was Bo Peep and my wife was my sheep. That was very fun. All of my kids got to pick their characters. And really, everybody was happy with their selection because there were so many. But you have done something fun.

[00:20:34] And this is actually my favorite way to pull inspiration was where did you, your iconic thing, where did you pull your inspiration for that costume? You know, when you talk about, when you buy tickets, you're starting to think about your costume. I am always thinking about my costume. And it's like, what? Oh, this would be a good one. Oh, this would be good. And I don't know, somewhere along the way, I saw the grandma in Carousel of Progress and thought, I can pull that off. I can do that.

[00:21:00] And it's also was just, I was a recent grandma and it was just a fun idea to highlight the grandma-ness of my new life. And I don't know, it was exciting to do. It felt like it was very simple. Boy, it ended up being so hot. The headphones and the glove were, had latex components. So dang hot. So dang hot. But, but otherwise, if I had not had that, it was fine. Cause it was just a little dress and I, I put the collar on, but you know, the toughest

[00:21:28] thing about that decision, they changed the costume right after I decided to do it. And I mean, like right before. In the actual ride. I could not believe it. In the ride. Yes. In the ride. She wore a different outfit, but nobody really knew the new outfit yet. So the people who recognized what I was wearing, that's the outfit they knew. So it was fine. It was the best ever. I, if you're somebody that's really creative, I encourage you to look beyond Disney film.

[00:21:57] You know, Disney film is easy to pull off. Like I said, we have done it. My kids have done every version of Toy Story there is. We have done Nightmare Before Christmas. We also are very heavily into getting creative and making our own costumes at home for regular Halloween. One of my favorites ever was my kids were all a different lamp. So my son was a lava lamp. My littlest girl was a, was the Pixar lamp, like the one that bounces on the ball.

[00:22:24] And my oldest daughter was the light lamp from Christmas Story. So we love to lean in and get creative like that. I think anytime you want to dig deep and be an inanimate object, I think leaning into your favorite ride, what an awesome way to do it. What if you have a large group and you're all a different Disney snack? You know, if you're a really creative type, dig into your favorite component of Disney. Disney bound is your favorite resort, right? Dig into your favorite thing about Disney and then bring it to life on you.

[00:22:54] And that's when you're at peak Mickey's not so scary Halloween party. You are, you have amazing crafted costumes. Like I, when we showed everybody, all the different ones, they're incredible. And so my wife makes a lot of them. Yeah. Oh my gosh. They're incredible. And I like to find something that I can just buy that type of outfit. You know, repurpose. You like to repurpose. Yeah. Yes. And, and so like, what is the grandma? I was like, I can find that dress. I can find that car.

[00:23:24] I can, you know, so that's how I kind of do mine. I also try to choose mine based on the character. Like I still am really focused on finding grandmas, you know, like I'm like, I want to find the old lady of the story. Like, I think I want to do one day soon from Moana, the village crazy lady. You know, I think I would like to do that some year. I don't know. So we'll see, but it's, you know, that's kind of how I'm looking. I'm always looking at where's the old lady in the film. Where's the old lady in the story. And that's just what I have kind of happily embraced.

[00:23:54] I'm good with it. And then I'll just do family from there. I also still want to do the tangled Rapunzel and I, cause my daughter could so easily be Rapunzel with her long blonde hair and build out from that. I think my husband could be the horse Maximus. I think I could be a mother Gothel, you know, like I would want to be her. You know, it's just like anybody that's my age that grew up a fan of the spice girls, right? You have that one spice you identify with.

[00:24:22] Like I am baby spice in my core. And if I ever go to a spice girls concert with anybody, I get to be baby spice, right? When you start to look at Disney films and then you get to start saying, oh, you could be this and you could be that. It gets really fun. I can't help it. I can't help it. You know, look at your get up, the group you're going with and the type of person you are and, and then start to build in those four categories. We sort of said from, I am not creative and I want to get out of this in the bare minimum

[00:24:50] to, I want to build everything from the ground up and everything in between. Just make sure you are getting involved on the level you're comfortable with. And it will be so much fun. Before we wrap it up, I do want to give a, I don't think shout out is the right word, but a mention of the new cast member costumes. Yeah, we do need to talk about that. In the past, those dresses and those outfits that the men had to wear and the long floor length dresses the girls were wearing, they looked miserably hot. Sometimes I look at what Disney cast members are put in and I'm like, how, how is anybody thinking this is a good idea?

[00:25:20] So they needed a lighter material for those hot nights and they got new party costumes. Do you like them? That's such an unfair question. When I try to be nice, you know, I try to be a nice person. You can have an opinion and still be nice. I know. I know. I have a 110% support of get them new costumes, right? Like find them something new. Boy, feel like with the talent at Disney, they could have done something different. They almost look screen printed.

[00:25:49] You know, they almost look like screen printed Amazon wear. Like you get it on Amazon. Like the kind that they won't even take back. Like, have you ever ordered something from Amazon? I ordered something one time that was the screen printed. In fact, it was going to be for the Christmas party and it was so awful and just cheap and awful. And so I was like, no, I'm returning this. And Amazon said, we don't want it back. We'll give you your money. Or those websites that make you websites, especially if you have like kids right now, you'll come across a website. You got to be good at identifying when they're fake because you'll look, you'll see this.

[00:26:19] Oh, look at this gorgeous cable knit sweater. And it's got the word wicked woven in it. And it's half green and half pink. And it's so beautiful. What a great sweater. And then you order it and it's screen printed sweatshirt. And it's so ugly and cheap. That's almost what these look like to me. They almost just look like cheap screen printing. And don't get me wrong. I'm happy for them if they're cooler. Great. But no, I know. And I hope they're, they look better in person. I don't know.

[00:26:47] That's another thing that's really good for costuming. I've seen people dress as cast members. So I've seen people be VIP tour guides or skipper canteen, you know, jungle cruise navigators. Don't be too exact or they will kick you out because you, you cannot go in so much exactly like them. That they get mistaken. They get mistaken. It would be perfect for that. Yeah. Because if you are trying to imitate so well that other people ask you questions, they're going to kick you out. Yeah. Yeah. But that is a fun. Being a nod to a cast member is really great.

[00:27:17] I hope they look better. You know, part of the, honestly the biggest issue for me, I don't really even mind the coloring. It's, it does go with the dark gloomy theme of, you know, but it's those dark shorts and the length of the shorts that are just kind of like, Disney is so Disney. Everything should be the best. I think that's my problem is I expect everything Disney from costume to experience to be the best. And this was a little womp womp. Yeah.

[00:27:46] I hope that it's, and I hope it makes them happy. Yeah. I hope you're cooler, but you're not cooler.
